What is Aleph א all about?

Aleph א is a beginners course for learning the basics of biblical Hebrew and equipping each student with a thorough understanding of the Hebrew alphabet, vowels, nouns, verbs, and foundations of grammar. See Course Curriculum below for specific details.

Live classes will begin on Sunday, May 5 and conclude on Friday, July 12 2019. The course offers two live sessions per week on Sunday and Wednesday evenings via Zoom video, the recordings of which will be available to the student for review at any time.

Megan R., PhD

Megan received her PhD from UCLA with a focus in ancient Jewish history and religion. She has been interested in the Hebrew language since she was young and hasn't stopped since. Before her phD program, she received her M.A in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and her B.A. in Jewish Studies from the American Jewish University. She is proficient in both biblical and modern Hebrew, as well as various Aramaic dialects including Syriac.

Her teaching philosophy is informed by years as a student of language and takes a holistic approach to integrating reading skills, grammar, and comprehension.

She currently lives in northern Spain with her spouse, Taylor, and enjoys teaching, traveling, and buying books.

When does the course start and finish?
The course will begin on May 5 and conclude on July 12, 2019. Students will have lifetime access to course lectures and may progress with the scheduled lectures or go at their own pace.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
When will there be live class sessions?
Two live video lectures will be hosted each week of the course on Wednesday and Sunday evenings for one hour. Outside of these two hours, students may interact on the discussion board with questions and comments on the week's readings and course material.
Is there any prior knowledge required?
Absolutely not! Whether you already have the alphabet memorized or have no idea what an "aleph" looks like, this course will provide you with the basics needed in order to progress through the material smoothly.
Is there a textbook for the course?
Yes! The required textbook is inexpensive and will last all the way through the first course and into the second course, Aleph ב, should you choose to continue with your learning. Students are required to purchase the textbook on their own before the start of the course and will be directed to the best online prices available.
